When PNG is useful
Use PNG when a website, editor, or publishing workflow requires that format. PNG stores the converted pixels losslessly, which can also be useful before further editing.
For photographs on the web, keeping the original JPG often means a smaller download for your visitors.
Format limitations
- Converting JPG to PNG does not restore detail or quality already lost in the JPG.
- It does not remove the background or create transparency. The background stays as it is.
- PNG files can be substantially larger than the original JPG.

A few common questions
What are the file and dimension limits?
Each JPG can be up to 20 MB (20,000,000 bytes) and 24 megapixels (24,000,000 pixels), with neither side exceeding 16,384 pixels. These limits are inclusive. Images over the limits are rejected; they are never automatically resized.
File size alone does not indicate memory usage. A 24-megapixel image can need about 96 MB for just one decoded pixel buffer, and conversion needs additional memory. A device with limited memory may need a smaller image even within these limits.
Will a portrait photo stay the right way up?
Yes. The browser applies the JPG’s EXIF orientation to the preview and exported pixels. For a photo rotated 90 degrees, width and height swap to match the image as you see it. The tool keeps those oriented dimensions without resizing or upscaling.
Are my photos uploaded or saved by this website?
No. Image contents and filenames stay in your browser. There are no upload requests or server copies. Start over or leave the page to release the tool’s image resources. A PNG is saved to your device when you choose to download it.
Will metadata and colors stay exactly the same?
This tool exports image pixels through Canvas; it does not copy the original EXIF, camera, GPS, or other metadata. Rotation is baked into the pixels. Browser color management may change color profiles or how some colors are represented, so this is not a metadata-preserving or archival conversion.
Why is my JPG not opening?
The tool checks the JPEG signature and headers, then asks your browser to decode it. A renamed file, incomplete download, damaged JPEG, unsupported JPEG encoding, or image above the limits may be rejected. Try exporting the image again from its original source. This tool needs JavaScript and a browser with image decoding and Canvas support.
